Reopening of the Dom Pedro Laguna Golf Course

After a requalification based on three key pillars: sustainability, promoting biodiversity and improving the quality of the course, the reopening of the Dom Pedro Laguna Golf Course will be on September 1, 2022.

Dom Pedro Laguna is located on a relatively flat and open land, with many water obstacles. It is considerably different from the other courses and is therefore considered a fundamental piece that completes the diversified offer of the Dom Pedro golf courses in Vilamoura. Many of its holes give the course a links layout that offers different and varied options and solutions for playing, a typical feature of the design of its author, the American architect Joseph Lee.

Although it has always been cherished by golfers and subscribers, Dom Pedro Hotels & Golf Collection soon recognised the need for fundamental improvements to raise the quality of this golf course. The clear definition of the course areas through different shades and sizes of grass, the standardisation of the course and, equally important, the improvement in the use and preservation of water, were just some of these challenges that our teams set themselves.

Pillars of the Requalification of Dom Pedro Laguna

The requalification of the Dom Pedro Laguna golf course was based on three key pillars: sustainability, promoting biodiversity and improving the quality of the course.

At the reopening of Dom Pedro Laguna, you can expect a golf course in which it will be possible to clearly identify all areas to play, along with the contrast given by the different tones of grass and cutting heights.

Finally, the fairways are all the same, from the first to the eighteenth holes and from Monday to Sunday.

Thus, Dom Pedro Laguna will present a lot of consistency in terms of appearance and playability.

Sustainability of the Dom Pedro Laguna

The requalification of the Dom Pedro Laguna golf course, managed by Rui Grave, Greenkeeping Coordinator, besides improving the quality of the course, also focused on the sustainability of the course. "At the reopening of Dom Pedro Laguna, we can find a golf course that consumes -20% energy, -25% pesticides, -20% fertilizers and -50% water. A recovered course, and on which it will be possible to identify protected areas for the preservation of local birdlife", clarifies the person responsible for the implementation of this great project.

Complete renovation of the irrigation system

Water is the source of life. As such, a golf course with an outdated irrigation system can never be in good condition in the dry months.

With the complete renovation of the Dom Pedro Laguna irrigation system, it will be possible to reduce water consumption by around 30%, for the same playing area. This saving in water consumption is also possible due to the new varieties of grass selected, which are more tolerant of water shortages.

Decision to Requalify

It is well known that the Dom Pedro Laguna Golf Course is one of the golf courses in the Algarve that has been subject to continuous improvement over the years, and Dom Pedro Hotels & Golf Collection determined that the pandemic season was the best time to take a step forward and renovate the irrigation system, replace old grass varieties, solve drainage problems and improve the overall quality of the course.

With the leadership of the project under the responsibility of Rui Grave, Greenkeeping Coordinator, Dom Pedro Laguna will be a more sustainable and more consistent golf course.

We are waiting for you at the reopening of the Dom Pedro Laguna Golf Course on September 1st!
